  • Abeja

Abeja founders Ken and Ginger Harrison came to Walla Walla Valley in the late 1990s in search of land suitable for planting world class Cabernet Sauvignon. It was while searching for an ideal vineyard location that the couple discovered an extraordinary historic farm stead that captured their hearts and sparked their imagination. The idea for Abeja began to take hold. Not only was the property suited for grape growing and winemaking, but by restoring the farmstead’s existing buildings, the Harrisons saw the opportunity to preserve the property’s rich heritage while creating a one-of-a-kind Walla Walla wine country destination. Today Abeja is the realization of the Harrisons' vision. Winemakers Daniel Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler craft Abeja's acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot as well as the winery's sought-after, limited-release estate and reserve wines, offered exclusively to Abeja List members. The Inn at Abeja's impeccable hospitality, renowned gourmet breakfasts and refurbished farm cottages all invite visitors to slow down and unwind. The Kitchen at Abeja, open to the public for pre-fixe dinners four nights a week, showcases local ingredients in finely detailed courses alongside vintage Abeja wines with our new four-time James Beard award nominee chef, Mike Easton. Gardens, estate vineyards and the vistas of Walla Walla Valley encourage guests to explore while marveling in the property's history and savoring the modern comforts of a wine country retreat. With the support of two new investment groups, Abeja's focus remains centered on producing the highest quality experiences. By acknowledging the property's roots, The Inn at Abeja, The Kitchen at Abeja, and Abeja winery excitedly progress towards the shared goal of becoming a sustainable estate grown winery and truly world class Inn.Spanish for bee, the name Abeja (pronounced 'ah-BAY-ha') was chosen to honor a deep-rooted respect for the environment. The Inn at Abeja, The Kitchen at Abeja, and Abeja winery operate on the belief that each of us can make a difference in the world every day. Regardless of how small the gesture or detail, the difference made is worthwhile. It is with this same philosophy that Abeja crafts its wines and welcomes guests.

Mike Miller and his family began planting grapes on their farm in 1968. The family estate currently includes over 850 acres planted to vinifera grapes. In the early years, all of those grapes were sold to some of the signature wineries in Washington, but soon that idea evolved. His son Marcus had taken winemaking courses and done several internships at Washington wineries, as well as making wine "down under", while his daughter Lori had developed her skills and finished her education on the business and marketing side of wine in Australia. In 2005, they all joined forces to create Airfield Estates, a family business focused on 100% estate grown wines at exceptional values. Although almost 40% of those grapes are still contracted out, Marcus selects the best blocks for our own production. This combination has proven to be very successful, both in quality (scores from major publications and wine competitions are overwhelmingly positive including many “90+ point” scores and "Best Buy" recommendations on current wines) and quantity as the company continues to grow and expand.

Winemaker Lance Baer founded Baer Winery in 2000 with a single passion—to bring something unique to Woodinville. After years of working with some of the most prestigious wineries in the area, Lance wanted to take his winemaking skills in his own direction. Lance succeeded in handcrafting blends distinctly his own, and in April 2003 the first vintage of the winery’s signature blend, Ursa, was released. Ursa, a feminine expression of red wine, predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was soon followed by Arctos, a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. As operations moved from an apartment in Redmond to a converted property on six rural acres in Woodinville, the winery was able to grow in production. Lance’s passion went from just 200 cases in 2003 to over 3,000 cases now. In late 2007, Baer Winery moved into the popular warehouse wine complex near downtown Woodinville – a move which has allowed us to grow to producing approximately 3,500 cases per year, with a view to continuing to increase to 5,000. Sadly, our founder, son, brother and friend, Lance Baer, passed away in May of 2007, at the age of 39. But the Baer family, Lisa and Les, with the expertise of consulting winemaker Erica Orr, are continuing to produce the wines that Lance was devoted to creating, as well as continuing to evolve and add new blends to the winery’s line-up.

In the spring of 2021, the Matthews team set out to dramatically elevate its current vineyard holdings and add additional diversity to the vineyard portfolio as well as enhance its winemaking techniques. Our new Winemaking team, Alex Stewart and Hal Iverson, have been instrumental in crafting Washington State’s highest rated Sauvignon Blanc and more 100-point Cabernet Sauvignon wines than all other Washington wineries combined. The level of expertise they brought to Matthews resulted in a complete overhaul of existing winemaking techniques and processes. The overhaul began in the vineyards, with seven new vineyard sources for reds, and three new vineyard sources for Sauvignon Blanc. We also added new, carefully selected grape clones across all varietals to offer complexity and dimension at blending. We deliberately reduced grape yields across all varietals by 30% to concentrate and intensify flavor. The resulting wines have a richness and textural depth unlike anything Matthews has ever released.

Our story starts back in the 1940s when Louise Andrews parents, George and Mabel Smith started purchasing 7,800 acres of dry land in the Horse Heaven Hills, south of Prosser. During this time, the government used their land as a bombing range for practice during World War II. After the war, the government gave the Smiths a $10,000 stipend to help rebuild and continue farming the land. In 1949, Bob and Louise Andrews began farming the land. The land was some of the driest around, and with no water source available their only crop was dryland wheat. Knowing their future would not be as successful without water, Bob secured water rights in the early 1950s, allowing the farm to tap into underground aquifers that would change the farm as they knew it. This water was the key to a successful legacy that Bob and Louise left their family—it allowed them to diversify their farm over the next 20+ years to include raising cattle and growing crops like corn, beans, and sugar beets. The McKinley Springs story continues with the families of Bob, Scott, and Rob working together to be stewards of the land and creating a long legacy of faith, farming, and family. Andrews & Andrews & Andrews was formed 1979, and in 1980 Bob and his son Rob successfully planted what would come to be known as Block 1 of Cabernet Sauvignon. This successful planting is what propelled the family into becoming one of Washington's and Horse Heaven Hills' most successful wine grape growing families. As additional wine grapes were planted throughout the next ten years, the family entity of Andrews & Rowell was formed—this included brothers Scott & Rob Andrews and brother-in-law Doug Rowell. Throughout the years, the families involved in the farm have continued to grow. New members joining the family farm have allowed for large growth in all crops and created a lasting legacy of 73 years of successfully farming of dryland wheat, irrigated crops, and wine grapes.

It was teammate and NFL Hall of Famer, Dan Marino, who went into his personal cellar to introduce Damon to Washington State wines during the 1997 season. Over the next decade, the formers QB’s conversation about wine evolved into a discussion about owning and operating their own winery upon Huard’s retirement and return to Washington State. Damon’s family has deep roots in the heart of Washington wine country, helping pioneer the valley into the agricultural powerhouse that it is today. “The vision of making a truly great Washington wine is one that Damon and I have shared for a long time,” said Marino, one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history and a member of the NFL’s Hall of Fame. “Although there are more than 900 wineries in Washington State, we believe the industry is still in its adolescence and we want to be part of it as it grows into the world’s next great wine region.” Passing Time was launched with the 2012 vintage of cabernet and released in the spring of 2015 to rave reviews from wine critics and customers alike.Passing Time may seem like an obvious name for a wine brand that includes two former NFL quarterbacks as partners, but it wasn’t that easy, Marino said. “There’s the subtle football reference. When it’s fourth down in the red zone and you’re down by six with seconds left, it’s ‘Passing Time.’ And when you’re enjoying a bottle of great wine with good friends, it’s just Passing Time. We think it’s the perfect metaphor for the wine, and we can’t wait to share it with wine lovers who share our passion for great wine.”

In 2005, less than two years removed from college, I founded Revelry Vintners winery to share the wines that I loved with others. I started with the goal of producing three wines from Washington that were just as good or better than those being offered at much higher prices. Since that time, we have pioneered new formats, expanded the selection of wines we offer, and improved quality tirelessly. Through all of this that simple goal remains - to provide you with some of the finest wines you can buy, whether it costs fifteen bucks or fifty.Revelry Vintners today offers a complete lineup of wines, each a pure representation of their origins in the Columbia Valley - from our single-vineyard AERIALS™ Series of wines, to the Columbia Valley Collection where it all began. We craft our wines by the skilled hands of a chosen few in our cellars in Walla Walla Washington, relying on time tested techniques passed down to us from history, in unison with modern technology and few tricks of our own learned over time. Individually our wines are each very distinct, yet they all share the common qualities of balance, moderate structure, and dynamic flavor. This is the Revelry Vintners style. True to our beginnings, we work everyday to ensure that each new vintage we craft is better than the last, and that every bottle that bears the Revelry brand is one that you can trust to be excellent. We truly hope you enjoy our wines, and welcome you to come experience Revelry first hand in our tasting room in the Walla Walla Valley.

In 1972, before there was much of a wine industry in Washington state, the founders of Sagemoor made their initial vineyard plantings through determination and plenty of grit, putting about 400 acres of vines in the dirt across 3 unique vineyards: Sagemoor, Bacchus and Dionysus. Today, those plantings have expanded to encompass more than 1,300 acres and six distinct vineyards, with Weinbau, Gamache and Southwind having been added. The vineyards represent three American Viticultural Appellations, Southwind Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA, Weinbau Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope AVA and the other 4 vineyards in the White Bluffs AVA, growing over 2 dozen varietals. Sagemoor sells grapes to over 100 wineries in Washington State. For more information and history of Sagemoor please visit: www.sagemoorvineyards.comIn 2014, a fourth-generation tree-fruit business, Allan Bros Fruit of Naches, WA purchased Sagemoor. The Allan family has a long and rich history in the Yakima Valley growing, packing, and shipping premium tree-fruit since the 1920’s. Allan Bros immediately began a focus of positive involvement in the Washington state wine industry, as they had impacted the tree-fruit industry for generations through innovation in growing practices. Until the time of purchase by Allan Bros in 2014, Sagemoor sold all its grapes to wineries. A decision was made for Sagemoor to begin producing a small amount of wine under their own label through collaborative winemaking partnerships with John Abbott of Devona, Chris Peterson of Avennia, and Ali Mayfield. Sagemoor only made wine from grapes released by their winery partners, thus with limited availability of fruit, Sagemoor grew the winemaking program slowly while waiting for desired vineyard blocks. The goal was to showcase extraordinary blocks within the estate vineyards including 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon vines which became available in 2014. In 2016 some 1972 Sauvignon Blanc vines (the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in Washington state) and amazing Merlot and Cabernet Franc from Weinbau became available for Sagemoor to use. Small quantities of wines were made from these sources and more grapes to represent Sagemoor’s incredible vineyards continued to become accessible, including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah for a GMS blend. Beginning with the 2021-2022 vintages, all winemaking was brought together in the Sagemoor winery under our Director of Winemaking, Aryn Morell. Today Sagemoor sells about 95% of the grapes we grow, keeping around 5% for Sagemoor wines. The Sagemoor wines are a tribute to the hard work of the original partners and the employees who nurture the vineyards today. Sagemoor celebrates its history of original plantings from 1972 and wines from those vines and thus showcases the best of Washington wine. Sagemoor is proud to be one of the first vineyards certified Sustainable WA and sells grapes to over 100 wineries in WA. The legacy of Sagemoor lives through our employees, winery partnerships and Sagemoor wine, found at www.sagemoorestates.com

  • Spring Valley Vineyard

Spring Valley Vineyard is situated 12 miles northeast of Walla Walla, spread amid the picturesque wheat fields of southeastern Washington with the Blue Mountains providing the backdrop. The initial block of Merlot was planted in 1993 on a south-southwest facing hillside. The vines follow the north-south slope of the hills in vertical rows, an orientation that, combined with the declination of the slope, allows the vines to take optimal advantage of air drainage, sunshine, and the reflective nature of the surrounding wheat fields. The names given to the wines are a tribute to the family members who have struggled and succeeded in farming the same land where Spring Valley Vineyard now flourishes. Scott and Denise Whitman dove headfirst into the wine business in 2010 and have never looked back. Ten years after their start in Bellingham located in the northwest tip of Washington State (where it is too cool and wet to grow premium wine grapes), wine maker Scott Whitman felt there was something missing. The vineyard. So, the couple sold their Bellingham winery and moved operations to the East side of the State. Whitman Hill Winery was born in 2020. A combination of their family name Whitman, and Denise’s maiden name Hill, Whitman Hill Winery also gives a sense of place, as their estate vineyard is located on the hillsides north of Zillah, Washington in the Yakima Valley.Driven to create highly sought-after wines, the Whitman’s meticulously farm their vineyard keeping crop loads very low, producing premium fruit full of complexity. The unique and varied terroir combined with high elevations and arid growing conditions contribute to the depth of the wines, lending to a sense of place. To taste the wine is to experience the place.

Woodward Canyon Winery was established in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. The winery was named for the canyon where Rick's family farmed for multiple generations and where the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard is now located. Woodward Canyon was the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley, and the Smalls were instrumental in obtaining federal approval for the Walla Walla Valley Appellation in 1984. The winery has consistently produced premium, age-worthy cabernet sauvignons, Bordeaux-style blends, merlots, and chardonnays. From the outset, it was determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. The family’s roots run deep in the land they have farmed for four generations. Rick and Darcey’s children, Jordan and Sager, share ownership of Woodward Canyon and are now in leadership roles in the winery and vineyard as their parents step back from day-to-day operations. Winemaker Kevin Mott was made a partner in 2011 as well.
